Why I am writing this?
I’m Nomad Patel. I run nomadpatel.in. I don’t travel by car. I only travel by ST and I write what I really see.
Honestly, when my family called me to Ambejogai, I checked Google first. “Ratnagiri to Ambejogai bus ticket price” – no real answer. When I searched Ratnagiri to Ambejogai distance, one site says 592 KM, another says 510 KM. No one wrote about the winding Konkan roads or the long stretch through Marathwada, where to eat, which platform, where is Panchganga bridge, is there a charging point?
So I thought, let me note down everything like I always do in my small diary. This post is that diary. Not a timetable.

My Bus – The Red One at Platform 3
I reached Ratnagiri bus stand at 6:45 AM. Still half sleepy. Ratnagiri has 12 platforms – I counted last time also. My bus was already there at Platform 3, red MSRTC ordinary, little dusty from Konkan ghat.
Conductor was standing with his little book. “Ambejogai, Ambejogai” he was shouting. I asked, “Barshi marge?” He said “Hoy”.
I paid Rs 766. He gave me a long ticket – 510 KM printed. I kept it safe.
I found window seat on right side. Right side is important for Konkan ghat – you get valley view. Left side you get only mountain wall.
At 7:30 AM sharp, driver started. That diesel sound, that jerk – and we left. salty Smell of sea slowly went away.
The road after Ratnagiri is not road, it’s like snake. Coconut trees both sides, then dense forest. Driver was honking at every turn – Peeen Peeen.
We passed Maruti Mandir Circle, Kuwarbav, Hatakhamba Naka and touched Mumbai-Goa highway.
8:00 AM – Pali Bus Stand – Around 30 KM – First Halt
After Hatakhamba Naka, bus took Mumbai-Goa highway and within 30 minutes reached Pali.
Pali Bus Stand was my first official halt. Bus stopped at Platform Number 1. Pali bus stand has total 4 platforms. Inside area – floor is pure mud, just packed earth. In monsoon it becomes fully muddy, in summer full dust.
Very small village stand. Only 2-3 shops outside. Few passengers got down, few farmers with vegetable baskets got in. I didn’t even get down, just saw from window.
My diary note: “Pali – Platform 1, 4 falat, mud floor, first halt after Hatakhamba, around 30 KM from Ratnagiri”
From Pali, bus went into real Konkan interior – Nanij, Dabhol Budruk Ghat, Kondgaon – narrow roads, dense trees.
9:00 AM – Sakharapa – Mud and Greenery
At 9:00 AM we reached Sakharapa. Sakharapa has 4 platforms but ground is pure mud. In rains you will slip. I got down, my shoes became little brown.
I bought water for Rs 20. One old aunty was selling bananas. Few passengers got down. Bus looked empty now.
I wrote in diary – “Sakharapa – 4 falat, mud, quiet, 55 KM, 9 AM, water 20 Rs” – My handwriting was shaky because bus was moving.
After Sakharapa, Amba Ghat started. Very steep. Bus was going in 2nd gear. I could see down valley – green, green and more green. Monkeys sitting on wall watching us like we are intruders. Passing through the ghat, the villages at the foothill of the mountain like Chandoli and Yelane.
10:00 AM – Malkapur – 84 KM Done – Banana Break
At 10:00 AM we reached Malkapur. Malkapur also has 4 platforms. My bus stopped at Platform 4. Conductor shouted “15 minute halt”.
This was 3rd stop. Till now 84 KM done from Ratnagiri. I was already tired.
Next to me, a young boy was going to Kolhapur for job interview. He was holding his file so tight, his knuckles white. He asked me “Kolhapur kitni door?” I said “48 KM, 1 hour”. He smiled nervously. I said “All the best”. He said “Thank you bhaiya”.
I bought one banana for Rs 10 and ate standing.
My note – “Malkapur – 4 falat, Platform 4, 84 KM done, 48 KM to Kolhapur, banana 10 Rs”
From Malkapur to Kolhapur, road is via Shahuwadi, Karajoshi, Bambavde, Kerle, Ambevadi. Bus didn’t stop, just passed. Fields started – open, wide. Hills gone. Now we left Konkan.
11:30 AM – Kolhapur – Panchganga River and Corn
Suddenly Panchganga river came. Wide river, people bathing, ladies washing clothes. We crossed bridge. Then passing through famous Rajaram Maharaj Statue further city traffic started – rickshaws, bikes, horns.
Kolhapur bus stand at 11:30 AM, Platform 5. Biggest stand I have seen after Pandharpur. So much noise. Vendors shouting “Garama Garam Bhutta”.
I was hungry. I bought corn for Rs 25. Hot, spicy, lemon on top. Best corn I had.
Kolhapur to Pandharpur is 180 KM. Still long.
My note – “Kolhapur – Platform 5, big stand, Panchganga crossed, 134 KM, corn 25 Rs, 11:30 AM”
We left Kolhapur. Just outside stand, we crossed Chhatrapati Tarabai statue circle, then again second iron bridge on Panchganga. Then Herle and Hatkanangale – just 2 minute stop. Some workers with tiffins boarded.
1:00 PM – Jaysingpur and 2:00 PM – Miraj – Krishna Bridge
After Jaysingpur we reached Ankali, and crossed Krishna river. Very wide, sandy banks, water shining. Bridge was very long.
Jaysingpur at 1:00 PM. 156 KM from Ratnagiri done. 6th stop. From here Pandharpur 141 KM left.
Miraj at 2:00 PM, Platform 4. From Miraj to Pandharpur 128 KM left – 3 hours more. Driver said “Pandharpur 3 ghanta”.
My note – “Miraj – Platform 4, 2 PM, 128 KM to Pandharpur”
After Miraj, road became best road of whole journey. Smooth highway. We crossed Borgaon Toll, Shirdhon, Nagaj Fata, Junoni, Ankadhal Toll. Bus was going 75-80 speed. No halts. I almost slept but ghat in morning made me sleepy.
4:15 PM – Sangola – My Lunch at Last
Sangola at 4:15 PM. Finally lunch break. I was so hungry, I could eat anything.
Small hotel near stand – simple thali, bhakri, dal, rice, bhaji. I ordered. Rs 80. Hot, homemade taste. Many drivers were eating there, so I knew it is good place.
From Sangola to Pandharpur just 28 KM.
My note – “Sangola – lunch thali 80 Rs, 4:15 PM, 28 KM to Pandharpur”
5:00 PM – Pandharpur – Pilgrims Everywhere
Via Manjari village and Sangola Naka, we reached Pandharpur at 5:00 PM, Platform 5.
Till now 300 KM done. 10th stop.
Pandharpur stand was full of pilgrims. People with tulsi mala, chanting “Vitthal Vitthal”. Some carrying small kids on shoulder. It felt different. Peaceful even in crowd.
I didn’t get down much, just bought water. Longest cement bus stand in Maharashtra I think.
My note – “Pandharpur – Platform 5, 300 KM, 5 PM, pilgrims, big cement stand”
We left Pandharpur via Chandrabhaga bridge again. Then Adhiv, Ashti villages. Road became single and dusty. Construction work going on, so lot of dust inside bus. I closed my window.
6:16 PM – Kurduwadi – 354 KM and Darkness Starts
Under Shetphal Udan Pul, we reached Kurduwadi at 6:16 PM. 354 KM done. 11th stop. From here Ambejogai 147 KM – 3.5 hours more.
Sky was dark now. No street lights after Kurduwadi. Only bus headlight. Both sides farm land.
My note – “Kurduwadi – 11th stop, 354 KM, 6:16 PM, dark started, 147 KM left”
Via Ridhore village, narrow road. Driver was very careful. Occasional bike coming opposite with full light on face.
Barshi Bus Stand – 386 KM – 7:45 PM – Jijau Chowk and Bhosale Chowk
After Ridhore village, we entered Barshi city. In Barshi, my bus went via Jijau Chowk and then Bhosale Chowk – these two chowks are main landmarks of Barshi. From both chowks, bus took turn towards Barshi bus stand.
We reached Barshi Bus Stand at 7:45 PM. 386 KM done. 12th stop. Fully dark outside, yellow lights in stand. Barshi stand is confusing – platforms are scattered at different places, not at one place like Kolhapur.
From Barshi to Kalamb is 55 KM. From Barshi to Ambejogai 108 KM left – about 1.5 hours more as per conductor.
I got down and bought hot strong tea for Rs 15 near platform. In cold night of February, that tea with ginger taste was heaven.
My diary note: “Barshi – 12th stop, via Jijau Chowk and Bhosale Chowk, 386 KM, 7:45 PM, scattered platforms, 55 KM to Kalamb, tea 15 Rs”
Via Kusalamb, Pimpalwadi villages. Dark and quiet. I was counting KM now. 400 KM done, 410, 420…
8:30 PM – Yermala – 2 Platforms Only
Yermala at 8:30 PM. Very small stand, only 2 platforms, kachha road. I remembered Yermala from my last Aurangabad to Ichalkaranji journey also – same small stand. Brief 2 minute halt.
My note – “Yermala – 2 platforms only, 8:30 PM, brief stop”
Yermala to Kalamb is 30 KM.
9:00 PM – Kalamb – 6 Platforms and 10:15 PM – Ambejogai – Finally
Via Andora village, Shivaji Maharaj Chowk, reached Kalamb at 9:00 PM. Kalamb has 6 platforms. At night, stand looked empty.
From Kalamb via Malegaon, Yusuf Wadgaon, Digul, Amba, Lokhandi Sawargaon, Veer Savarkar Chowk…

I stepped down. Legs were stiff, back was paining, eyes heavy. But I made it.
510 KM. 15 stops. 14 hours 45 minutes. From sea to plateau.
My family was waiting at gate. They waved. I smiled. That one smile makes 510 KM worth it.

What I Learned – Honestly
- This was my longest bus journey ever. 510 kilometers is a long distance. But it’s just one state.but Maharashtra is longer.
- The landscape changes completely. I saw 3 types of Maharashtra in one day – green Konkan with coconut trees, Western Maharashtra with sugarcane fields and wide rivers, and Marathwada with dry farms and narrow roads.From green, lush Konkan to the dry, open plains of Marathwada.
- The ghat section is beautiful. Dense forests, winding roads, and small streams. This was the most scenic part of the journey.Best part was Konkan ghat between Ratnagiri and Sakharapa – forests, curves, monkeys.
- Pandharpur is special. The pilgrims, the river, the devotion – it’s an unforgettable experience. Seeing pilgrims chanting at 5 PM.
- People are resilient. The drivers and conductors work long hours, day after day.People are gold. That boy going for interview, that tea vendor at Barshi who added extra ginger without asking – small things you remember.
- The bus network connects everything. MSRTC buses reach the most remote villages.
- Every journey is a story. And every story is worth telling.
- Family makes it worth it. At the end of 510 kilometers, they are waiting for you.
- Patience is a skill. 13+ hours on a bus demands it.
- Travel changes you. You see things. You hear things. You feel things. And you come back different.
- Worst part after Pandharpur. Dusty single road till Barshi. And no charging point. My phone died at 80%. So carry power bank.
Final Tips – From My Mistakes
- Come early at Ratnagiri – Platform 3, 7 AM. Bus leaves sharp.
- Take right side window – ghat view you will never forget.
- Carry water, some biscuits – 14 hours is long, you will feel hungry before Sangola.
- Use washroom at Kolhapur and Pandharpur only – other stands not clean.
- Eat at Sangola – only proper lunch halt. After that only tea at Barshi.
- Power bank is must – No charging in ordinary bus. My phone died.
- Don’t keep luggage in upper rack in ghat – it falls.
