Friends, in my last post which was Panaji to Kurundwad, I had written at the end that I took a break and returned home to Chikkodi. After completing my long circuit of 1242 kilometres from Sambhajinagar to Kalaburagi to Akkalkot to Panaji and then Panaji to Kurundwad, I came back to Chikkodi from Kurundwad by KSRTC bus. The distance is 30 kilometres.
I took three days of complete rest at my home in Chikkodi. After that rest, I started my next journey on 19th march 2026. I went from Chikkodi to Kolhapur by a local ST bus. The distance is 62 kilometres. From Kolhapur Central Bus Stand, I took the Kolhapur to Roha Hirakani bus. So this post is a direct continuation of my previous journey. I am writing this post from my home table in Chikkodi with my diary in front of me.
I live 62 kilometres from Kolhapur. I run the websites nomadpatel.in. I have been travelling in MSRTC buses for the last five years. I have covered more than sixty routes. Whatever I write is my own real experience. My handwritten diary is my proof. I am not connected to MSRTC.
The ticket price and timing that I am mentioning in this post are as per my journey date. It may change in the future. So please check the MSRTC website or the Kolhapur depot enquiry counter for the latest information.
I am also writing this post as a reply to many questions that people asked in MSRTC Lovers Facebook Group and in MSRTC timetable groups. Many people were asking whether there is a direct bus from Kolhapur to Roha, whether it is a Hirakani bus, whether booking is available, and which route is better. I will answer all those questions in this post with my real diary.

Kolhapur to Roha MSRTC Bus Timings
There are two direct Hirakani buses from Kolhapur to Roha every day. The timings are given below.
The first bus leaves Kolhapur at 6:00 AM in the morning. This bus goes via Karad, Mahabaleshwar, Poladpur, Mahad, Mangaon, Indapur and then reaches Roha. This route is shorter and it goes through the Mahabaleshwar ghat which is very scenic in the morning.
The second bus leaves Kolhapur at 7:00 PM in the evening. This bus goes via Karad, Patan, Chiplun, Mahad, Mangaon, Indapur and then reaches Roha. This route is slightly longer but the road condition is better. My bus was the second one.
The bus number was MH 14 KQ 3964. This bus leaves Kolhapur at 7:00 PM. It is a Hirakani bus and it is a booking vehicle. You can book your seat online on the MSRTC Bus application or at the counter. It is better to book your seat one day in advance, especially on Friday and Sunday because the bus gets full.
Kolhapur to Roha Distance by Road
The official distance from Kolhapur to Roha via Chiplun is 313 kilometres. It takes a minimum of eight hours to cover this distance. The real road distance is slightly more, around 320 to 325 kilometres. Via Mahabaleshwar the distance is less, around 285 kilometres, and it takes around seven to seven and a half hours.
As per my diary, Kolhapur to Karad is 80 kilometres, Karad to Patan is 44 kilometres, Patan to Koyananagar is 20 kilometres, Koyananagar to Chiplun is 41 kilometres via Kumbharli Ghat, Chiplun to Mahad is 70 kilometres, Mahad to Mangaon is 40 kilometres, Mangaon to Indapur is 15 kilometres, and Indapur to Roha is 10 kilometres. So the total is around 320 kilometres on the road, but the official MSRTC board shows 313 kilometres.
Kolhapur to Roha Ticket Price
The ticket price for Kolhapur to Roha in this Hirakani booking bus was 715 rupees. I paid 715 rupees for the full journey from Kolhapur to Roha 19th march 2026. This is the Hirakani fare. It is a 2 by 2 pushback semi luxury bus. The fare may increase slightly now due to diesel and toll, and it may be around 700 to 750 rupees. If you travel only till Chiplun, the fare is around 380 rupees. If you travel till Mahad, the fare is around 520 rupees.
For privacy and safety, I am not uploading my ticket photo with the QR code. Many people upload tickets with QR codes, but that is not safe. My handwritten diary with the bus number and timing is my proof. I have kept the ticket safe at my home in Chikkodi.
My Bus Details – MH 14 KQ 3964
My bus number was MH 14 KQ 3964. This is a Pune RTO registration, but the bus belongs to Kolhapur Division. It is a Hirakani bus. The colour is white and green. It has 2 by 2 seating with 45 seats. The seats are pushback seats. It is not a sleeper bus. Some Hirakani buses have a USB charging point near the driver cabin, but not for every seat. There is a bottle holder near every seat. The bus condition was good and the tyres were new. The driver was very experienced in ghat driving. The conductor was helpful and he was announcing all stops loudly.
This bus is a booking vehicle. It means you can reserve your seat in advance. I booked my seat from the Kolhapur Central Bus Stand counter at 4:00 PM on the same day. I got window seat number 14. The counter staff told me that the bus was 70 percent full. So it is always better to book one day before if you are travelling on a weekend.
My Real Diary – Kolhapur to Roha Full Night Journey With All Villages
Before the journey – Chikkodi to Kolhapur
I left my home in Chikkodi at 4:30 PM by a local ST bus to Kolhapur. The distance is 62 kilometres and it took one and a half hours. The ticket was 115 rupees. I reached Kolhapur Central Bus Stand at 6:00 PM. My Hirakani bus was already standing on the platform. The board showed Kolhapur to Roha via Chiplun. I had vada pav and tea at the Kolhapur canteen. I paid 30 rupees. My mobile battery was 85 percent.
The bus left Kolhapur at 7:00 PM and came on the Pune Bangalore Express Highway and crossed the Panchganga River Bridge
The bus left Kolhapur Central Bus Stand at exactly 7:00 PM. Within five to ten minutes after leaving the bus stand, the bus came on the Pune Bangalore Express Highway. This highway is NH 48 and it is a six lane highway. The bus was running at a speed of 70 to 80 kilometres per hour. Within a few minutes, the bus crossed the Panchganga River Bridge. This bridge is very big and it is located just after Kolhapur city. I had crossed the same bridge in my earlier Panaji to Kurundwad journey during daytime and also during my Akkalkot to Panaji night journey. At 7:10 PM in the evening, the river water looked black, but the bridge lights were on. The view from the right side window was the best for the river.
The bus passed through Shiroli, Vathar Tarf Vadgaon, Naka, Itakare, Peth and Nerla and reached Karad
After crossing the Panchganga River Bridge, the bus went via Shiroli. Shiroli is an industrial area located just after Kolhapur. It is around 10 kilometres from Kolhapur. There are many factories in this area. After Shiroli, the bus went to Vathar Tarf Vadgaon. The bus stopped there for two minutes. Many MIDC workers got down there. This place is around 25 kilometres from Kolhapur.
After that, the bus crossed Naka, which is a toll naka on the highway. After covering some distance, the next village on the highway itself is Itakare. It is a small village located around 40 kilometres from Kolhapur. After Itakare, the bus passed through Peth which is 45 kilometres from Kolhapur and then Nerla which is 50 kilometres from Kolhapur. Both are small villages and the bus took a one minute halt in each village.
After Nerla, before entering Karad city, there is a circle near Kolhapur Naka. The bus stopped at Kolhapur Naka for two minutes. Many passengers who wanted to go to Karad city got down there. From Kolhapur Naka to Karad Bus Stand the distance is only one kilometre.
The bus reached Karad Bus Stand at 8:45 PM and halted for 15 minutes on Platform Number 17
The bus reached Karad Bus Stand at exactly 8:45 PM at night. The distance from Kolhapur to Karad is 80 kilometres. It took one hour and forty five minutes to reach Karad including the small halts. At Karad Bus Stand the bus took a fifteen minute halt. Our bus was standing on Platform Number 17. Karad Bus Stand is a big bus stand. There are many buses for Pune, Satara and Sangli. I went to the washroom and had tea. I paid 15 rupees. My mobile battery was 70 percent. After the fifteen minute halt, the bus left Platform Number 17 at 9:00 PM towards Chiplun.
The bus went via Vihe, Abdarwadi, Nava Rasta, Patan, Helwak and crossed the Koyana River Bridge
After leaving Karad, the bus started going towards Chiplun. It went via Vihe village. Vihe is a small village located around 70 kilometres from Kolhapur. The bus did not halt there. After Vihe, the bus went via Abdarwadi which is 75 kilometres from Kolhapur. After Abdarwadi, the bus reached Nava Rasta which means a new road junction. It is located around 80 kilometres from Kolhapur. From Nava Rasta, the road to Patan starts.
The bus reached Patan Bus Stand at around 9:45 PM. Patan is around 95 kilometres from Kolhapur and 44 kilometres from Karad. Patan is a taluka place and the bus stand is small. The bus took a three minute halt there. Many people who wanted to go to Koyananagar got down.
After Patan, for the further journey towards Chiplun, the bus went to Helwak. At Helwak, there is a bridge on the Koyana River. The bus crossed the Koyana River Bridge. The Koyana River is a big river which comes from the Koyana Dam. It was 10:00 PM at night, so the river was not clearly visible, but I could hear the sound of the bridge.
The bus went via Paytacha Wada and reached Koyananagar at 10:45 PM for dinner halt, then crossed Kumbharli Ghat which is 41 kilometres to Chiplun via Ghatmatha
After crossing the Koyana River Bridge at Helwak, the bus went via Paytacha Wada. Paytacha Wada is a small village located around 105 kilometres from Kolhapur. After Paytacha Wada, the bus reached Koyananagar Bus Stand at 10:45 PM at night. At Koyananagar, the bus took a twenty minute halt for dinner. This halt was for having food. Many drivers halt here because after this place the Kumbharli Ghat starts and there are no hotels in the ghat section.
At Koyananagar I had a thali for 100 rupees. The thali had rice, bhakri, dal and two vegetables. Many truck drivers were also having dinner there. From Koyananagar, Chiplun is 41 kilometres via Kumbharli Ghat. This distance is mentioned in the official board also.
After the dinner halt at 10:45 PM, the bus left Koyananagar and went via Ghatmatha village. Ghatmatha is the starting point of Kumbharli Ghat. From Ghatmatha, the bus started crossing the Kumbharli Ghat. Kumbharli Ghat is around 15 to 20 kilometres long. It is not very steep like Gaganbavada Ghat, but it has continuous turns. Both sides of the road have dense forest and there are no street lights. The driver was using the horn on every turn.
After completely crossing the Kumbharli Ghat, the bus reached Chiplun Bus Stand at exactly 12:15 AM at midnight. So the bus took one and a half hours to cover 41 kilometres from Koyananagar to Chiplun via the ghat. The speed was only 25 to 30 kilometres per hour in the ghat section.
At Chiplun the driver and conductor changed, then the bus went via Tulashi and reached Mahad at 2:20 AM
At Chiplun Bus Stand at 12:15 AM, the driver and conductor changed. The new driver came from Chiplun depot. This is a common practice for long route Hirakani buses. The driver changes after 190 kilometres. The bus took a fifteen minute halt at Chiplun. Many passengers who wanted to go to Mumbai got into the bus and some passengers for Mahad and Mangaon also got in.
After Chiplun, the next main stop is Mahad. After leaving Chiplun Bus Stand, the bus went via Tulashi village. Tulashi is a small village on the Mumbai Goa Highway. It is located around 200 kilometres from Kolhapur. The bus did not halt there and just passed through.
After completing at least two and a half hours of journey from Chiplun, the bus reached Mahad Bus Stand at 2:20 AM at night. So the bus took two hours and five minutes from Chiplun to Mahad. The distance is around 70 kilometres. Mahad is famous as the base for Raigad Fort and it is located on the Savitri River. At 2:20 AM the bus stand was half empty, but the tea stall was open.
The bus went from Mahad to Mangaon in about one hour and then reached Roha at 4:00 AM via Indapur
From Mahad Bus Stand, the bus went towards Mangaon road. After travelling for a long time, which means almost one hour, the bus reached Mangaon Bus Stand. The distance from Mahad to Mangaon is around 40 kilometres and it takes one hour. The bus reached Mangaon at around 3:20 AM. Mangaon is 300 kilometres from Kolhapur.
After Mangaon, the bus went via Indapur village. Indapur is located 315 kilometres from Kolhapur. It is a small village and the bus took a two minute halt there. Finally, the bus reached Roha at 4:00 AM early morning. Roha is located around 325 kilometres from Kolhapur. So the last stretch from Mangaon to Indapur to Roha is 25 kilometres.
In this way, the bus completed almost eight hours of journey from Kolhapur to Roha. Officially it is eight hours, but my journey took nine hours from 7:00 PM to 4:00 AM including all halts. The official distance is 313 kilometres as per the MSRTC board, but the real road distance is around 325 kilometres.
Expense List
I paid 115 rupees for the local ST bus from Chikkodi to Kolhapur. I paid 30 rupees for vada pav and tea at Kolhapur Central Bus Stand. I paid 715 rupees for the ticket from Kolhapur to Roha in Hirakani bus number MH 14 KQ 3964. I paid 15 rupees for tea at Karad Bus Stand on Platform Number 17. I paid 100 rupees for dinner thali at Koyananagar at 10:45 PM. I paid 15 rupees for tea at Mahad at 2:20 AM and 15 rupees for tea at Roha at 4:00 AM. My total expense was 1005 rupees. It is better to carry 1200 rupees safely with extra money for water and a power bank. If you are travelling only from Kolhapur to Roha, the ticket cost is 715 rupees.
Best Part and Worst Part of This Route
The best part of this route is the Pune Bangalore Express Highway just after Kolhapur. The bus runs very fast on this six lane highway and crossing the Panchganga River Bridge at 7:10 PM during sunset is a very beautiful experience. The second best part is the Koyananagar to Chiplun section via Kumbharli Ghat which is 41 kilometres long. At night the cold wind in the ghat is very fresh. The third best part is the Koyana River Bridge at Helwak.
The worst part is that there is no charging point for all seats in this Hirakani bus. There is only one charging point near the driver cabin. So you must carry a power bank. There is no washroom inside the bus, so you have to use the washrooms at Karad, Koyananagar, Chiplun and Mahad bus stands only. The night journey is a little tiring because it takes nine hours.
Final Destination – Roha at 4:00 AM
Roha Bus Stand at 4:00 AM early morning is small but it is an important junction for Murud, Alibag, Pune and Mumbai. At 4:00 AM many Pune buses start from Roha. At that time the bus stand was dark but tea stalls were open. I took rest in the waiting room for two hours and then I took a Alibag to Pandharpur ST bus at 10:15 AM the same day on 20th March 2026.
